Helena is getting a moment on a national stage. City Manager Lake announced at the September 29 commission meeting that Helena was selected as one of roughly six cities to be featured by the International City and County Managers Association at its national conference in mid-October. A short video — about five minutes — will be screened for city and county managers from across the country attending the conference.
The video features Mayor Dean and City Manager Lake, among others, and is meant to highlight something about how Helena operates or what makes the city worth paying attention to among municipal management professionals. Before it screens at the conference, Lake said the commission would get a preview at the following week's meeting.
Being chosen for this kind of feature is a quiet but meaningful form of recognition — the ICMA is the professional organization that sets the standard for city and county management nationwide, and getting Helena in front of that audience puts the city's approach to local government in front of peers who influence how municipalities across the country are run. For residents, it's a signal that Helena's city management is being noticed beyond the Rockies.
