The National Weather Service office in Great Falls issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Helena area late Wednesday night, covering the Helena Valley, the Elkhorn and Boulder Mountains, and the Gates of the Mountains and Upper Blackfoot corridor including MacDonald Pass. The watch runs through Sunday afternoon, October 11th.
Forecasters are calling for heavy wet snow, with accumulations up to six inches possible in the valley below 5,000 feet and six to twelve inches likely above that elevation. On MacDonald Pass and in the Gates of the Mountains and Upper Blackfoot area, the NWS is projecting eight to twelve inches above 6,000 feet. Winds could gust to 45 miles per hour across affected areas.
The watch period begins Saturday afternoon in the pass areas and Saturday evening in the valley, with impacts continuing through Sunday afternoon. The NWS specifically flagged mountain travel as potentially very difficult — passes like MacDonald, which carries U.S. Highway 12 between Helena and Missoula, are particularly vulnerable to rapid condition changes during early-season heavy wet snow events.
Helena typically sees its first meaningful snowfall in October, but a storm of this potential scope arriving before mid-month can catch residents and infrastructure unprepared. Wet snow in particular is heavy and can bring down tree limbs and power lines, especially before leaves have fully dropped. Residents should monitor updated NWS forecasts and check Montana Department of Transportation road conditions before any mountain travel this weekend.
