The National Weather Service office in Great Falls has issued a High Wind Watch for the Helena Valley and surrounding areas, running from Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night. West winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph.

The watch covers a wide swath of central Montana, including the Big Belt, Bridger, and Castle Mountains, Gates of the Mountains, the Upper Blackfoot drainage, MacDonald Pass, and valleys in Meagher, Fergus, and Judith Basin counties. Residents in these areas should expect hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles, and the potential for downed trees and power lines.

Helena's position in the valley makes it particularly susceptible to channeled wind events out of the west. NWS forecasters note that impacts include the possibility of property damage and dangerous travel conditions. Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture and equipment before Wednesday morning and to check updated forecasts as conditions develop.

A High Wind Watch means conditions are favorable for a High Wind Warning to be issued. The NWS Great Falls office will post updated guidance as the system approaches.
