The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest has several active orders affecting public use in the region.

A food storage order covering the north half of the Crazy Mountains has been in effect since April 14, 2025, under Forest Order #01-15-07-25-03. The order requires visitors to store food and attractants in bear-resistant containers or approved storage methods.

Forest Service Road #8998 on the Rocky Mountain Ranger District has been closed since January 21, 2026, under Forest Order #01-15-01-26-01.

Separate occupancy, use, and trail restrictions apply to the entire Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex under Forest Order #01-15-00-25-01, in effect since March 7, 2025. Those restrictions also cover specific areas including the Our Lake Trail and lake area, the area beneath the Chinese Wall, and the Castle Creek Riverside Campsite on the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest.

A broader food and wildlife attractant storage order covering the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem — including portions of the Flathead, Lolo, Kootenai, Helena-Lewis and Clark, and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forests — has been in place since March 1, 2023, under Forest Order #R1-2023-02.

Visitors planning trips into any of these areas are encouraged to review current orders before heading out.
