Mayor Emily K. Dean signed a proclamation at the September 29 commission meeting declaring October 4 through 10, 2026 as Fire Prevention Week in Helena, with this year's theme built around a hazard that didn't exist in most homes a decade ago: lithium-ion batteries.
The theme — 'Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower' — speaks directly to the proliferation of battery-powered devices in everyday life. Phones, laptops, e-bikes, and electric scooters all rely on lithium-ion technology, and all carry fire risk when charged improperly, left plugged in overnight, or paired with off-brand chargers.
The proclamation encouraged Helena residents to use only manufacturer-provided chargers and cables, avoid charging devices while sleeping or away from home, and store batteries away from flammable materials. The timing paired with the fire department's new community risk reduction program, which also launched in early October with neighborhood canvassing on smoke alarm checks and home safety — giving Fire Prevention Week some operational weight beyond the ceremonial proclamation.
