The National Weather Service office in Great Falls issued a Winter Storm Warning beginning the evening of October 10 and running through 6 a.m. Monday, October 12, covering the Big Belt, Bridger, and Castle Mountains east and southeast of Helena, as well as portions of central and north-central Montana.
Forecasters called for 6 to 14 inches of heavy, wet snow in the Big Belt, Bridger, and Castle ranges, with winds gusting to 40 mph. The broader central Montana warning projected 10 to 20 inches, with isolated totals approaching 30 inches within the Bob Marshall Wilderness and up to 7 inches in the Lincoln Valley. Gusts in the wider area reached 45 mph.
The combination of wet, heavy snow and sustained wind created significant risks beyond road conditions alone. NWS warned that downed tree branches and isolated power outages were possible throughout the warning area. For Helena residents, the storm served as a blunt early-October reminder that the window between summer and serious winter in this part of Montana is short. Anyone with property, livestock, or travel plans in the affected mountain corridors was advised to prepare accordingly before the storm moved through.
