A Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service office in Great Falls covers a broad swath of north-central Montana from Tuesday afternoon through Sunday midday, with excessive rainfall the primary concern for communities across the region.
The watch, issued Saturday morning, spans the East Glacier Park Region, Eastern and Western Glacier County, Western and Eastern Toole, Liberty, Central and Eastern Pondera, Eastern Teton, the Northern High Plains, and the Southern Rocky Mountain Front — a corridor that stretches from the Front Range communities east across the high plains.
The timing follows a rough Labor Day weekend across Montana. Scattered severe thunderstorms moved through the region Sunday evening and overnight, producing large hail in several locations. The largest confirmed stone — measured at two and a half to three inches in diameter — fell near Hilger in Fergus County. Gusty winds accompanied the storm cells as well.
Residents in the watch area should monitor creek and drainage levels through the weekend and avoid low-water crossings during heavy rain. The watch remains in effect until noon Sunday, September 8.
