The Helena Valley Highland Gathering returns July 18 at the East Helena Rodeo Arena, bringing together Highland athletics, live music, Irish dance, food vendors, and a mead tasting in what organizers are billing as a free, family-friendly day of Celtic culture.

The gathering features both experienced Highland athletes and first-time competitors in traditional heavy events — the kind of contests where large men throw telephone-pole-sized cabers and heave stone weights for distance. For spectators unfamiliar with the sport, it tends to be more entertaining than it sounds on paper.

Beyond the athletics, the event includes live music and Irish dancers, plus vendors and the mead tasting component that distinguishes it from a standard fair. The East Helena Rodeo Grounds, a relatively new venue for this kind of event, gives organizers space to spread out the various activities without the compressed logistics of an urban park.

Admission is free. The event runs Saturday, July 18. The East Helena Rodeo Arena is located in East Helena.
