A crew from the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest spent part of their morning this week pulling litter from Canyon Ferry Road, collecting 13 bags of trash and recyclables along the highway corridor. The cleanup was organized by forest staff and targeted a stretch of road where windblown litter poses a direct risk to nearby waterways.
Forest officials noted that highway litter doesn't stay put — wind carries it into the waterways and riparian areas that run alongside Canyon Ferry Road, where it can affect wildlife and degrade habitat. Canyon Ferry Reservoir is one of the most heavily used recreational lakes in Montana, and the watershed that feeds it draws ongoing attention from both the Forest Service and local conservation groups.
The effort was modest in scale but pointed in its message: stewardship doesn't require a major project or a weekend volunteer event. For Helena residents who drive Canyon Ferry Road regularly, the cleanup is a visible reminder that the corridor between the city and the reservoir takes a toll from daily traffic.
