A Helena man appeared in Lewis & Clark County Justice Court Thursday on a felony charge of sexual abuse of children after a state internet crimes task force traced a suspicious IP address back to his home.

Karsten Wade Nield made his initial appearance following an investigation by the Montana Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which received a tip linking an IP address to Nield. Investigators obtained a search warrant as part of the inquiry.

Nield faces one count of felony sexual abuse of children, which under Montana law covers the possession and distribution of child pornography. The charge carries significant potential prison time upon conviction.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is a statewide unit that coordinates with federal and local law enforcement to identify and investigate online exploitation of minors. Cases typically begin with tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which receives reports from internet service providers when child sexual abuse material is detected on their platforms. Details on bond conditions and Nield's next court date were not immediately available.
