The Poplar Volunteer Fire Department responded alongside crews from Culbertson, but the cathedral — a fixture of the small northeastern Montana community for more than eight decades — could not be saved. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
For Poplar, a community of roughly 800 people on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, the loss is not just architectural. Our Lady of Lourdes has been the spiritual and social center for generations of Catholic families in the area, and its destruction leaves the congregation without a permanent worship space as the investigation continues.
The fire is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of historic structures in rural Montana, where volunteer fire departments often face significant distances and limited resources.
