Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the American Bear Foundation are bringing a bear safety event to the Blackfoot Taproom on Sunday, October 5th from 5 to 8 p.m., with hands-on bear spray training scheduled in the alley behind the taproom at 6 p.m.
The event is designed to reach people wherever they encounter bears — in the backcountry, along the river, or in their own backyard. Organizers say they'll cover bear behavior, how conflicts typically develop, and practical steps to avoid them. A raffle drawing is also planned as part of the evening.
Helena sits in the middle of grizzly bear recovery country. With expanding grizzly populations in the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex and documented movement into the valleys, the question of what to do when you see a bear — or a bear sees you — is relevant to a wide cross-section of residents, from hunters and hikers to people who keep chickens or a compost pile. Bear spray remains the most effective deterrent available to the public, and proper deployment technique isn't intuitive without practice.
The event is free to attend. The Blackfoot Taproom is located in Helena. Anyone planning to be in the mountains this fall — or just living on the edges of town — would find the 6 p.m. spray training a worthwhile hour.
