Federal prosecutors charged a 31-year-old California man, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump following the shooting outside the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday. Allen was arraigned Monday in Washington, D.C., federal court and also faces charges of interstate transportation of a firearm with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. He faces up to life in prison if convicted on the assassination attempt charge.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Acting Assistant Director for the Criminal Investigative Division Darren Cox appeared at a Department of Justice press conference Monday to announce the charges. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Allen made clear his intent was to kill the president and, in her words, "bring down as many of the high-ranking Cabinet officials as he could."

Pirro said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Cabinet members all evacuated the Washington Hilton ballroom safely on Saturday night.
