A Lewis and Clark County District Court judge has put a temporary hold on the Montana Republican Party's newly adopted bylaws, pumping the brakes on internal party rules that critics say concentrate power away from rank-and-file voters. The ruling came Tuesday following a lawsuit filed by Republican organizations in Yellowstone and Chouteau counties.
The challenged bylaws, adopted last month by the state party, include provisions that would allow the party to remove members at will — a power the plaintiffs argue strips ordinary Republicans of meaningful participation in party governance. The lawsuit frames the dispute as one about who controls the GOP in Montana: the party's central leadership structure in Helena, or the voters and county organizations that form its base.
The temporary block prevents the new bylaws from taking effect while the court considers the merits of the challenge. A hearing date had not been publicly announced as of press time. The Montana Republican Party headquarters is located in Helena.
