The ask mirrors similar grassroots efforts that have surfaced in at least two other Montana counties in recent months.
The petition laid out three specific requests: that Cascade County urge the Montana Legislature to intervene in data center siting and oversight, that the commission pause permitting for new data center development while policy catches up, and that the county take a more active role in scrutinizing proposals before they reach final approval. The Golden Triangle Resource Council, which has historically focused on agricultural and environmental issues in north-central Montana, framed the petition as a response to what members described as rapid and largely unexamined industry expansion into the region.
Data centers have become a flashpoint across rural Montana as technology companies and cryptocurrency operators scout locations with cheap land, available power, and cold climates that reduce cooling costs. Critics argue the facilities put outsized strain on rural electrical grids and water supplies while generating relatively few permanent local jobs. Supporters counter that they bring construction work, tax revenue, and broadband infrastructure investment to communities that have struggled to attract development.
Cascade County commissioners did not vote on the petition Tuesday, and no moratorium was announced. The commission's response — and whether the issue moves to the Legislature — remains to be seen when commissioners take up the matter again.
