A food storage order has been in effect on the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest since February 28, 2023, under Forest Order #R1-2023-02. The order requires visitors to properly store food, garbage, and other attractants to prevent bears from becoming habituated to human food sources. The Forest Service says the measure is intended to protect both people and bears. Visitors camping or recreating on the forest are required to comply with the order. Failure to follow food storage regulations on federal land can result in fines.
