A wildfire ignited Saturday afternoon near the Judith Basin and Wheatland County line, prompting aerial resource requests and drawing U.S. Forest Service crews to a landscape already under a Red Flag Warning. The Twin Sisters Fire was first reported shortly before 2 p.m. and had reached 20 acres by the time initial reports came out of Wheatland County Emergency Management.
The fire is burning in agricultural country east of the Continental Divide, an area where Red Flag conditions — low humidity, dry fuels, and elevated winds — can allow grass and range fires to move quickly and unpredictably. Wheatland County's emergency management office warned agricultural producers in the area to take precautions, though no evacuations had been ordered as of Saturday afternoon.
The USFS confirmed it was working the scene alongside local resources, and aerial support had been requested to assist with containment efforts. The Judith Gap area sits between Lewistown and Harlowton and is predominantly open rangeland and dryland farm country. Fire conditions across central Montana have been deteriorating in recent weeks as the region has dried out following a below-average precipitation stretch.
